An extremely rare original painting by legendary South Carolina artist Jim Harrison
Acrylic on canvas. This piece measures 24 x 36 inches in size, excluding frame.
Denmark, South Carolina, native Jim Harrison is a legend in the art world, with showings from luxurious New York galleries, to images in books, and is equally well-known for his iconic perennial illustrated calendars and limited-edition prints on behalf of Coca Cola. Jim's art career began when, in the 1940s, he apprenticed with sign painter J.J. Cornforth, rendering Coca Cola (and other company) logos on the sides and rooftops of old barns and country stores.. He made a career by, like Campbell Frost (the two were friends for many years), painting pictures of old rural buildings–often bearing advertising slogans of their day–as well as superb paintings featuring coastal scenes and etherial clouds.
Jim's expensive signed prints are now highly collectible, and widely traded in antique stores, and online, and remain extremely popular. Because of Jim's close friendship with Campbell Frost, we've made arrangements with his estate to offer select original Jim Harrison Paintings. This is your very rare opportunity to own one (or more) of Jim Harrison's hand-rendered works of art!
A graduate of the University of South Carolina, Jim Harrison shifted careers from teaching and coaching to painting full-time, when his unique talents with the paint brush became more widely recognized. The Gamecock, depicted above, is the official mascot of Jim's alma mater, and is one of the very rare paintings he created primarily featuring a bird or animal.
Sadly, Jim passed away in March of 2016. We are indeed honored to be able to offer this, and other of his brilliant original pieces, on a first come, first served basis, to the serious collector. "The Gamecock," acrylic on canvas, measures 24 by 36 inches.
Additional photos of this painting (including those featuring the large included frame) are available upon request. Like all of the works featured in our online gallery, this (and other) Jim Harrison painting(s) can be delivered to your home or office, or seen locally, by appointment. Other of Jim's very few remaining original works will feature here periodically; in the interim, we invite you to reach out to us through our CONTACT page if you'd like to receive information on his available art in advance. Prices range from below $5,000 to $75,000.
Jim Harrison's "The Gamecock," which would enjoy an ultimate pride of place for a true South Carolna athletics fan, is available now for $20,000. The price includes the cost of the frame and mounting. Additional photos are available upon request; if you reside in the Southeastern United States, notify us if you'd like to view this (or any work listed on this site) in person.

Own some pieces of Wartime and Comic Book History
Three original wartime drawings by Marvel Comics Artist Bill LaCava
Pen and pencil on paper. These pieces measure, individually, 8.5 x 11 inches in size
Three original wartime drawings by Marvel Comics Artist Bill LaCava
Pen and pencil on paper. These pieces measure, individually, 8.5 x 11 inches in size
These original untitled drawings, signed, dated, and inscribed by artist William Morse (Bill) LaCava were created in the field shortly after NAZI Germany surrendered in WWII. Each depicts life of the soldier (LaCava held the rank of Corporal in the U.S. Army) during the period.
Bill LaCava was the only child of famed film director Gregory LaCava (who helmed such Hollywood classics as "My Man Godfrey," "Stage Door," "The Age of Consent," and the controversial "Gabriel Over the Whitehouse." The Senior LaCava, like his son, began his professional life as an artist, first rendering newspaper cartoons, then going to work as an animator for Walter Lantz (creator of Woody Woodpecker), before moving on to a successful career as a director of live action films in the 1930s.
After leaving the Army, Bill LaCava went on to work as a comic book artist for Iger Studios, Atlas (and finally) Marvel Comics, where he worked with Stan Lee. The Marvel database lists LaCava as a cover artist, creator, penciler, and inker. His work appeared (among others) in publications like "Sports Action," "Strange Tales," "Adventures in Terror," and "Battle." These unusual museum-worthy pieces are hand drawn on non-archival paper the artist had at hand, and are nicely mounted in a 18 x 36 inch frame. The third drawing sustained a tear in its center, the tear doesn't affect the overall image, and might be repaired by a qualified art restoration specialist. More detailed images of each drawing are available upon request.
After leaving the comic industry, Bill LaCava became an ad agency art director. He died in 1991.
These framed pieces of comic and wartime art history are available for $2,100. Additional photos are available upon request. If you reside in the Southeastern United States, notify us if you'd like to view this (or any work listed on this site) in person.

Acrylic on canvas. This piece measures 24 x 36 inches in size (excluding frame)
Unusual and unpublished piece by Audubon-affiliated artist
Acrylic on canvas. This piece measures 24 x 36 inches in size (excluding frame)
This acrylic on canvas was painted by Karl E. Karalus in the 1990s. The painting is beautifully framed and mounted. Born in November of 1929, Karl Karalus worked as an engineer for Minneapolis and Saulte St. Marie Railroad for 23 years before leaving the profession to pursue his true love of painting, on a full-time basis, in 1971.
He would become affiliated with the popular Mutual of Omaha "Wild Kingdom" television program, and served as the illustrator of numerous books on birds, collaborating with the likes of respected Audubon authors David Maehr and Herbert Kale. Karl illustrated at least eight books, and co-authored three more.
His best-known published works are Owls of North America (Doubleday, 1974), The Wading Birds of North America (Doubleday, 1981), Florida's Birds (Pineapple Press, 1990), and Parrots of South Florida (Pineapple Press, 2007). He also provided illustrations for an adventure story, Wild Season (Little, Brown, and Company, 1967).
The artist specialized in painting birds, which makes this piece very unusual. This painting, one of Karl's larger known works, features a pair of moose encountering a trio of Ruffed Grouse on a snowy afternoon. The piece was commissioned for the man who framed it, and has (as yet) never been published nor displayed in a gallery.
Karl Karalus retired to North Carolina, and was laid to rest in Kissimmee, Florida, upon his death in 2013.
We have several smaller framed and unframed bird images by Karl Karalus, in a variety of mediums. Two copies of Karl's better-known books will convey with this sale. As always, the piece can be delivered for your personal inspection anywhere in the Southeastern United States. Enquire on our CONTACT page for details, or to see other paintings by Karl Karalus.
This large, beautifully framed, and very rare piece of wildlife art perfection (along with two of Karl's out-of-print books) is available today for $9,600. Additional photos are available upon request; if you reside in the Southeastern United States, notify us if you'd like to view this (or any work listed on this site) in person.

Original Production Drawing by famed Disney Artist
Rendered and signed by one of Walt Disney's original "Nine Old Men"
Pencil on studio paper. This piece measures 11.5 x 15.5 inches in size.
Rendered and signed by one of Walt Disney's original "Nine Old Men"
Pencil on studio paper. This piece measures 11.5 x 15.5 inches in size.
Sketched by Ollie Johnston, one of Disney Studio's famed "Nine Old Men," this original production drawing depicts Merlin the Wizard from the 1963 animated classic The Sword in the Stone. The piece measures 11.5 x 15.5 inches, and features the original studio registration marks. Drawings like these were forwarded to artists who applied ink tracings on celluloid sheets which were, in turn, painted by still another department before being photographed for the movie in which they appeared.
The artist claimed to have fashioned the nose of the popular character after that of studio head Walt Disney. Ollie, along with best friend and neighbor Frank Thomas, cowrote a popular book entitled Disney Villains, a signed copy of which will also be provided to the buyer of this piece.
Ollie Johnston's storied career in film animation began in 1934, and ended a remarkable 44 years later. His illustrations appeared in most Disney animated feature films of the period, including Pinocchio, Fantasia, and Bambi, among many others.
Ollie served on the advisory board of the National Student Film Institute, and was recognized with a National Medal of the Arts award, on November 9, 1995, in the Oval Office by then-President George W. Bush. He and Thomas also coauthored the limited-edition text Disney Animation: The Illusion of Life. He died in 2008.
Later Pixar films would feature cartoon versions of Ollie Johnston; these include 1999's The Iron Giant, where he appears as a train engineer, and 2004's The Incredibles. Ollie (like Walt Disney himself) built a miniature railroad in his Palo Alto, California backyard.
This original signed drawing, and deluxe limited edition book signed by both Ollie Johnston and Frank Thomas, is available for $1,650. Additional photos are available upon request; if you reside in the Southeastern United States, notify us if you'd like to view this (or any work listed on this site) in person.
